바르다가 실제로 자신의 첫째 딸을 임신하고 있을 때 만들어진 것으로서 그녀는 파리의 ‘라 무페’ 거리를 매일 방문하여 그때 그때 찍은 자료들을 통해서 영화를 구성해 나간다. ‘연인들’, ‘술취함’, ‘휴일’, ‘노인’, ‘열망’과 같은 단위들로 나누어진 영화는 은유적인 이미지나 부조리한 상징들을 통해서 삶의 과정 자체와 일상적 행위들의 부조리성에 대한 다양한 성찰을 담아 낸다. 그 결과 새 생명의 탄생에 대한 기대감에 차 있던 여성이 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 희망없는 일상과, 삶이 단지 가난함과 나이 들어 감에 불과하다는 사실을 깨닫게 된다.
