It’s a whole new battlefield and the Northern captains must conquer new styles of fishing, treacherous waters and the wrath of the Outer Banks’ top fishermen. 원제는 エースをねらえ!, 야마모토 스미카가 1972년부터 마가렛에 연재한 순정만화. 1975년까지 이어진 1부와 1978년부터 1980년까지 연재한 2부가 있다. 베르사이유의 장미와 함께 당시 일본 순정만화계를 휩쓸어버린 작품. 한국에는 '맨발의 청춘'이란 제목의 해적판으로 나와 인기를 끌었고, MBC에서 '테니스의 여왕'이란 제목으로 극장판 애니메이션을 방영, 투니버스에서 '정상을 향하여'라는 제목으로 티비판 애니메이션을 방영했다. 이후 애장판이 정식 한국어판으로 발매되었다. 스포츠 근성물(스포콘) 붐 때 나온 만화지만 당시 근성 스포츠물에서 필수 요소로 나오던 마구와 필살기들이 배제되어 있다. 사실 편집부에서 시켰는지 중간에 마구가 나올 뻔도 했으나 기본기에 충실하면 마구따위 쳐낼 수 있다는 충격의 논리로 마구를 배제시켰다. 물론 작중에서의 테니스에는 과장된 요소가 여럿 있으나 어떤 연출상의 면모가 많고 아예 선을 넘지는 않는다. 거인의 별 같은 여느 근성물에선 주인공은 자기 하는 스포츠 말고는 눈에 들어오지도 않고 일상이고 뭐고 없이 밥먹고 운동만 하는 것이 주된 패턴이기 마련. 그러나 이 작품의 주인공 히로미는 코치에게 시달리면서도 친구와 수다도 떨고 집에서 고양이하고도 놀고 혼자 푸념도 하고 등등 또래 소녀다운 묘사가 빠지지 않는다. 특훈 또한 무작정 자신을 혹사하는 것이 아니고 노력과 자기관리로 이어나가 인생론으로 승화시켰다. 타겟층이 다른 만큼 취향에 맞게 적절히 반영한 듯하다. 당대의 유행인 스포츠 근성물의 공식을 순정만화에 가져오면서도 근성물의 공식을 극복하고, 거기다 순정만화스런 요소인 소녀다운 일상과 심리묘사와 인간 관계 표현 등을 넣어서, 스포츠물로서도 순정물로서도 새로운 장을 연 작품.
