일세를 풍미하는 일월 마교는 강호를 지배하려는 야심을 품고 있고, 이에 '오악검파'는 연맹을 결성하여 마교와 겨루려 한다. 이 때 마교의 교주 임아행이 실종되는 사건이 벌어 지게되고, 호법교주 곡양이 범인으로 지목되나 그는 임아행의 외동딸 임영영을 인질로 삼고 강호로 잠적을 한다. 10년 후 마교의 새교주 동방불패는 곡양과 임영영이 다시 나타났다는 말을 듣고 그들을 찾아내 임영영의 옛날 일을 모두 알려주지만 그녀는 곡양이 자신의 아버지를 죽였다는 말을 믿지 않고 오히려 곡양을 동방불패로부터 구해내나, 그는 결국 형산파의 유정풍과 함께 오악파 맹주 좌랭선에 의해 죽게 된다. 곡양은 죽기 전 '소오강호'라고 쓰여진 악보를 영호충이라는 인물에게 넘겨주지만, 그는 살인죄와 '벽사검보'의 탈취자로 오해를 받아 강호에서 쫓겨난 인물이었다. 오악 각파가 무림 맹주의 자리를 차지하기 위해 서로 싸우고, 영호충은 사과애에서 면벽 수련 도중 풍청양으로부터 독고구검을 전수 받고 벽사검을 훔쳤다는 누명을 쓰게 된다. 한편 영호충은 향문천과 함께 10년 전에 실종된 마교의 교주 임아행이 살아있다는 것을 알아내고 그 숨은 음모를 알아 내게 되는데, 그것은 '동방불패'가 무공의 비밀과 보물의 행방을 알아낼 계략으로 감금 하고 있었던 것이었다. 영호충과 임영영은 임아행을 구하지만 그로 인해 강호무림에는 한바탕 피의 바람이 몰아 치게 되고.
